If you have seen these anime, then you know that their endings are wonderful, but confusing, unrealistic and maybe a little disappointing. Here are my top six notable anime endings:
#6 - Fruits Basket
When high school student Tohru Honda's mother dies in a car crash on her way to work, she decides to live with her grandfather. Renovations on the house cause her to move out of her grandfather's house temporarily and, since she has nowhere else to go, Tohru begins living in a tent and supporting herself. That is, until she finds a home in the least likely of places, inhabited by her popular classmate Yuki Sohma and his cousins Shigure and Kyo.
The Sohmas live with a curse. Twelve members of the family (not including Kyo, who is the cat) are possessed by spirits of the Chinese zodiac and turn into their zodiac animal when they are weak, under stress, or when hugged by someone of the opposite gender.
When Tohru discovers the Sohmas' secret, she promises not to tell and is allowed to keep living with them. Although the Sohmas' curse is deeper and darker than Tohru realized, her presence and her acceptance of them soon becomes a large, positive influence on those possessed by the zodiac. She sets out to break the curse and, on the way, meets and discovers the Sohma's vengeful zodiac spirits. Each has a different personality, just like the animals in the Chinese zodiac. Tohru's existence changes the Sohma clan's lives forever.
The concept of "FruitsBasket" is over 17 years old, the manga run from 1998-2006, and the anime ran in 2001. With only 26 episodes, this is one short and sweet show that's definitely worth watching!
The ending: This ending is one of the best (yet confusing) anime endings ever. Yes, I understood that somehow Tohru broke the curse... But how? It was a little confusing, because all I remember was her talking to the "zodiac god" and suddenly the curse was broken because she made him cry? It seems really unrealistic that this 15 year old girl made this "scary and harsh" king basically cry and turn the zodiac curse off. Hm?
Also, through out the series Tohru had a slight romance between between both Kyo Sohma and Yuki Sohma. We all had a preference between what male Sohma we wanted to give Tohru, but this series left that to our imagination. But in general, this was a light hearted and refreshing anime.
#5 - The Devil is a part timer!
The Demon Lord and one of his generals, Alciel, escape Ente Isla through a portal to modern Tokyo, Japan after being confronted by the Hero Emilia Justina and her companions. However, due to the lack of magic in the modern contemporary world, both the Demon Lord and Alciel change into forms representing what they would look like if they were human. In order to survive, the Demon Lord takes a part-time job in a fast food restaurant named MgRonald while Alciel serves as his houseman. One day, the Demon Lord, who now goes by Sadao Maō, meets a girl who is actually the Hero Emilia, who now goes by Emi Yusa. The story then unfolds and explores the personalities of each of the characters and their moral values. More characters show up from Ente Isla and they too face the new world dilemmas, often comically.
The ending:
This ending is often disappointing in many ways. I am happy that none of the main characters died, because through out the series many evil people/creatures were after every single character. However, this ends resolving nothing. Sadao is still on the earth, although he claims to want to be on the earth; but that seems unlikely. This series only had 13 episodes and that was evident. Although it tried to have a beginning and end, it didn't seem to have an real ending. It was so short and the ending didn't have anything resolved that I feel like there should be a second series or a season 2... Good thing that's under discussion!
#4 - Blue exorcist
The story revolves around Rin Okumura, a teenager possessing abnormal strength and endurance who, along with his twin brother Yukio, was raised by Father Shiro Fujimoto, an Exorcist. One day, Rin learns that he is the son of Satan, the strongest of all demons. Witnessing Shiro dying to protect him, Rin ends up doing what his guardian asked him never to do: draw the demon-slaying blade Kurikara, which restrains his demonic powers, from its scabbard. From that moment on, Rin not only gains permanent demonic features like fangs, pointed ears, and a tail, but also the power to ignite himself into blue flames that can destroy almost anything they touch.
At Fujimoto's funeral, Rin has an encounter with Fujimoto's friend Mephisto Pheles, who agrees with Rin's wish to become an Exorcist like his guardian to become stronger and to defeat Satan. Rin enrolls at the prestigious True Cross Academy, which is actually the Japanese branch of an international organization dedicated to protect the human realm, Assiah, from demons and other creatures from the demonic realm, Gehenna. Rin takes part in a special Exorcist course, the existence of which is known only by a few. Much to his surprise, he finds that his brother, Yukio, is already a veteran exorcist and becomes one of his teachers. Thus Rin's journey to become an Exorcist begins, accompanied by his brother and his fellow students who quickly become his friends and comrades-in-arms.
The ending: The show was wonderful! It is full of humor, hints of romance, two attractive teenagers! However, we though Rin was the only one in the series with Satans full powers. In the end we see Yukio suddenly get the same powers. The ending doesn't tell the audence whether Yukio gets permanent powers. If you are like me, then you might have died in joy seeing Demon!Yukio.
#3 Ouran High School Host Club.
Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at the prestigious Ouran Academy, a fictitious high school located in Bunkyo, Tokyo. Looking for a quiet place to study, Haruhi stumbles upon the Third Music Room, a place where the Ouran Academy Host Club, a group of six male students, gathers to entertain female "clients." During their initial encounter, Haruhi accidentally knocks over and breaks an antique vase valued at ¥8,000,000 (US$80,000 in the U.S. English manga)[1] and is told to repay the cost in service to the club as an errand boy. Haruhi's short hair, slouching attire and gender-ambiguous face cause her to be mistaken by the hosts for a male student. After a brief run as such, the Hosts soon realize that she's a "natural" in entertaining girls and promote her to full-Host status.[2] She agrees since Hosting will help her pay off her debt more quickly. The members of the club discover her true gender one by one, but they keep this fact a secret.
Ouran Elite Academy encompasses pre-school through high school and has an attached university program. Most students come from elite families, but a scholarship is annually awarded to the top scorer on a rigorous entrance examination. Haruhi is such a student for her grade level. The school's unofficial motto is "Lineage counts first, wealth a close second," meaning students with stellar family backgrounds but low socioeconomic status may be given top priority over those from rich families with lesser pedigrees.
Other than Haruhi, the other members of the Host Club include President Tamaki Suoh, Vice-president and "Shadow King" Kyoya Ootori; Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin, identical 1st-year twins; Mitsukuni "Honey" Haninozuka and his cousin Takashi "Mori" Morinozuka. Tamaki is the charming, beautiful hafu and top draw of the club with a 70% request rate, thus earning him the title of "King." Kyoya, however, is the "Shadow King," the true director who runs the show from behind the scenes with a charming facade and gracious manners. The Hitachiin twins, who share classes with Haruhi, are mischievous imps who utilize a devised brotherly love angle on their relationship to captivate their guests. Honey is from a distinguished martial arts family, but plays the role of a "boy Lolita" who has a great passion for stuffed animals and sweets while Mori is his tall, quiet protector with a fierce appearance and soft heart. All the characters are parodies of shojo manga characters, with Haruhi serving as the "natural" type, Tamaki as the "princely" type, Kyoya as the "cool" type, the Hitachiin twins as the "little devils" or "mischievous" type, Honey as the "Boy Lolita" type, and Mori as the "strong, silent type."
The ending: This ended with them basically saving Tamaki to going back to France. Again, the last scene hinted that Haruhi either married Tamiki or Kyoya later on. Although Tamaki was rather obvious about his attraction to Haruhi, we do know that Kyoya liked Haruhi too, considering he told her he wanted to have sex with her on a bed. Haruhi obviously declined his offer, but It wasn't because she didn't like him. So we don't know which one Haruhi likes. But we do know that both Tamiki and Kyoya's parents wanted their sons to marry her. Again, the author letting our imagination take over.
#2 - Physco-Pass
Psycho-Pass is set in 2113. The Sibyl System (シビュラシステム Shibyura Shisutemu?) is actively measuring the populace's mental states, personalities, and the probability that individuals will commit crimes, using a "cymatic scan" of the brain. The resulting assessment is called a Psycho-Pass (サイコパス Saikopasu?). When the probability of a person engaging in crimes measured by the Crime Coefficient (犯罪係数 Hanzaikeisū?) index exceeds a certain level in an individual, he or she is pursued, apprehended, and killed if necessary.
Story
The plot focuses on Akane Tsunemori, a new Inspector of Unit One—a police unit from the Public Safety Bureau's Criminal Investigation Division. Tsunemori hunts criminals alongside a special team of so-called latent criminals called Enforcers. Inspectors and Enforcers use large handguns called "Dominators"—special weapons designed to fire only at those with a higher-than-acceptable Crime Coefficient. Akane is ashamed of shooting the Enforcer Shinya Kogami during her first mission to protect a latent criminal. Kogami thanks her for stopping him from becoming a murderer, which persuades Akane to stay. She is accompanied by veteran Inspector Nobuchika Ginoza, a strict man who looks down on Enforcers, Tomomi Masaoka, a middle-aged man who used to be a detective, Shusei Kagari, a carefree young man who has been a latent criminal ever since he was a child, and Yayoi Kunizuka, a former musician turned into a latent criminal after interacting with a terrorist. During Akane's first investigations, the group learns about the existence of Shogo Makishima, a mastermind who is responsible for multiple crimes. Being Criminally Asymptomatic (免罪体質 Menzai Taishitsu?), Makishima's criminal psychology yields a low Crime Coefficient, making him safe from the Sibyl System and the Dominator.
The Enforcers and Inspectors start hunting Makishima, who aims to destroy the society created by the Sibyl System. To do this he causes riots in the city to draw the police away from the Health and Welfare Ministry's Nona Tower facility, where Sibyl is located. Akane and Kogami stop Makishima's forces while Enforcer Shūsei Kagari follows one of Makishima's allies to the tower where Bureau Chief Joshu Kasei kills Makishima's ally and Kagari to keep the true form of Sibyl a secret. Kasei tells Makishima that Sibyl is a hivemind of similarly asymptomatic individuals and wishes him to join the system but Makishima escapes. Realizing the truth behind Makishima's escape, Kogami leaves the group to kill him. Akane is later directly contacted by the Sibyl system, which orders her to capture Makishima alive. She agrees to do this on the condition that they withdraw the execution order for Kogami. Learning that Makishima plans to execute bioterrorism to weaken Japan's economy and bring the system down, the Criminal Investigation Division searches for both Makishima and Kogami. There, Makishima tries killing Ginoza but Masaoka sacrifices his life to save him. Despite Akane's efforts, Kogami kills Makishima and the former's erstwhile comrades never see him again.
The ending- Kogami is hinted to be dead. We see that Ginoza becomes an enforcer, which is hot and I'm okay with Enforcer!Gino. Yum. But, we do see that atleast 4 new characters come in, and that's were it gets confusing. We need to memorize new character, many characters are dead and easily replaced like they were nothing. Back on the main topic, the main character dies! No, I have not seen the new movie from earlier this January because it is only in RAW. But, he doesn't show up in season 2, so I'm okay with declaring him dead. It's just confusing how quickly they move on from all of the people that died. [sighs]
#1 - Death Note
Light Yagami is a bored young genius who resents all things evil. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers the "Death Note", a notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it. After experimenting with the notebook, Light confirms its authenticity and is joined by an unexpected house guest - the notebook's previous owner, a shinigami called Ryuk. Light tells Ryuk of his plan to exterminate all the criminals in the world, until only people whom he has judged to be honest and kind remain. Once he finishes creating this utopia, he means to rule over it as what he calls "the god of the new world".
Soon, the inexplicable deaths of criminals catch the attention of Interpol and the world-famous detective, "L". L stages a fake public appearance and quickly deduces that the serial killer, publicly known as "Kira" (キラ?, derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the word "killer"), is located in a single Japanese prefecture and can kill people by supernatural means. Light realizes that L will be his greatest hindrance, and begins a cat and mouse game with him.
Light attempts to create an alibi by helping L and his task force track down Kira. His plan is impeded by a lovestruck second Kira, famous model Misa Amane, and her shinigami Rem. When Misa identifies Light as the first Kira and tracks him down to his home, the two of them embark on a mutually manipulative and one-sided relationship; however, Misa's infatuation with Light drives her to make several errors and the two of them are increasingly suspected by L. Misa is soon arrested. To save themselves from execution, they temporarily relinquish ownership of their notebooks—returning themselves to a state of innocence by erasing their memories of the murders—and are detained under L's constant surveillance.
During their detention, a third Kira quickly appears. When it becomes clear that Light and Misa cannot be carrying out the third Kira's murders, they are restricted to L's headquarters under house arrest. The task force identify the third Kira as Yotsuba Group executive Kyosuke Higuchi and capture him. Upon touching the notebook, Light regains his memories as Kira and kills Higuchi, thereby regaining ownership of the Death Note "exactly as planned". The task force learn of the Death Notes and confirm the existence of shinigami. Light completes his complex plan by manipulating Rem into killing L, his guardian Watari, and - because she violates shinigami law by killing L to save Misa's life - herself. Upon L's death, he becomes the "second L" and expands his charade of searching for Kira, while carrying out the crimes himself.
The narrative picks up four years later, with Kira attracting a large network of contacts and a swell of public support. Two young men, raised as potential successors to L, appear - Near, a detective associated with the United States Government, and Mello, a member of the Mafia. As his first act against Kira, Mello attempts to obtain the Death Note held by the Kira task force, by kidnapping the director of Japan's National Police Agency. This plan is briefly stymied when Light murders the director out of hand. Refocusing on the families of the task force, Mello kidnaps Light's sister Sayu as a replacement; she is quickly rescued, but the task force's notebook is lost to Mello. To regain it, Light's father Soichiro trades half of his remaining life to Ryuk for the "Shinigami Eyes" - the ability to see people's names on sight. During an assault on Mello's headquarters, Soichiro learns Mello's name, but does not kill him. He is shot several times during the attack, and dies shortly afterward in hospital.
After this, Near and several members of the task force begin to suspect Light of being Kira. In response, Light persuades Misa to give up her notebook and raises another "Kira", Teru Mikami, a prosecutor and fervent supporter of Kira. Mikami kills Kira's former spokesman for being greedy and recruits Kiyomi Takada, a newscaster and Light's former girlfriend, to replace him. Light reveals himself to Takada as the original Kira, and knowing that he and the other Kiras are under Near's surveillance, constructs a decoy plan to conceal the whereabouts of the genuine Death Note.
Mello returns and kidnaps Takada, who kills him with a hidden notebook piece. Light then makes Takada commit suicide to keep her from implicating him, but Mikami, unaware of Light's actions, attempts to kill her as well. This exposes the genuine Death Note Mikami has concealed, revealing Light's plan at the last minute. At the story's climax, the two investigation teams meet in the "Yellow Box Warehouse". They are shortly joined by Mikami, who writes down the names of everyone in the warehouse except Light. Near then reveals that he replaced Mikami's notebook with a fake, and by the names written in it, is able to prove Light is Kira. In desperation, Light tries to use the last notebook piece in his watch to kill Near, but task force member Matsuda shoots him several times. Ryuk realizes Light has lost and uses his personal Death Note to kill Light with a heart attack, as he had promised to do one day at the beginning of the story.
The ending: I think a large majority of Death note fans wanted it to end when L died. If It ended when L died, then it would be obvious that Light won and became the God of the new world. Yes, we all agree that L needed to die. But when I watched the beginning of the series I though he would die at the end in a similar way Light Yagami would die. How BA would it be if the series ended with both Light and L dying at the same time? What if L killed Light and he felt so bad about it that he killed himself. (A girl can dream.) But instead Light got so impatient that he didn't realize some squirt like Near defeated him in the most obvious way. It's almost like the author needed Light to die quickly but was too lazy to kill him off in a memorable way. Light did die in the same way his thousands of victims died though. So I guess that was cool.
